CITY OF FUN.
2000 WORKMEN TO PREPARE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL FAIR.
From December Bth riglrt up to Oiiristmas Eve (says a London paper) the vast building of Olympia will be occupied by an- army of nearly 2000 -workmen, preparing for the International Fair, which will be more popularly known as the "Mammoth Fun City." Nearly every eide-shmv lias some direct or indirect connection with electricity, either for light or for motive power. On one of the three up-to-date roundabouts, which are valued at £15,000, there are no fewer than 300(1 electric lamps. Each showman is responsible for a vast amouut of machinery, and, m fact, the show might be described as an engineering exhibition m itself.
"Doomsday," one of the principal sideshows, which shows New York 1000 yeans hence, and the ■destinution of tine earth, is worked by electrical apparatus weighing over 50001bs. The whole show, however, is managed by one electrician, with an assistant.
The circus and the freaks will not interfere with the- army of workmen. They come to the Fair "word perfect." Even the "Aunt Sally" of one's youth is now an Americanised institution, and will be seen at Olympic m a meclianica] form. Instead of the old cocoanut-shy the patron of the new show aims wooden balls at the hens winch ate sitting on nests m a realistic farmyard. If the hen is hit squarely she tilts up, lays a hardboiled egg, and comes careering towards the winner with the egg.
