TOWN EDITION
A private message from Wellington states : "Town Hall packed to doors Saturday night. Mi Andrew Black, Miss Sinclair, ana Herr Borschke all received tremendous ovations."
In these times of "stiffness" between captains and their crews (says the Auckland Herald) it is very pleas-tint to have to record a ceremony which took place at the Sailors' Home. Captain Robert Campbell, of the barqueiitinc River Hunter, which was rccentlv wrecked at Whangape, received a presentation from the crew of the vessel. All the men were present on the occasion. Captain C. Grant, the manager of the Home, who had been deputed to make the presentation, -on their behalf, said it gave him very great pleasure to preside at an occasion of tliiM kind, which was probably a record in Auckland (.hipping cireks. The crew of the River Hunter desired him to convey their best wishes to Captain Campbell, who. when disaster had overtaken their vessel, proved himself not only a splendid seaman, but "a man." The crew wished him to express their high appreciation of his treatment to them, and hv* sterling qualities when the hour of trouble came along. The present from the crew was a lwutdsome ease of silver-mounted pipes and an amber cigar-holder. They all wished Captain Campbell every success in his future career, and wherever they were, no matter in what part of the world, they would always remember him as a sterling man. Captain Campbell made a feeling reply, assuring his men that lie valued their present very highly, and for the kindly feeling in which it was rendered. Hearty cheers were given for Captain Campbell and Captain Grant at the termination of the proceedings. During his speech. Captain Grant referred to tho great need of a branch of tlie Shipwreck Relief Society in Auckland, a port which had more distressed #>ea men landed in it than any other in New Zealand, yet thero was no provision made for their wants.
