(Press Assn— By Telegraph.— Copyright) (Received May 12. 10.40 a.m.) ' LONDON. May 11. At the wool sales, fourth day. there is a strong sale for all sorts. Prices are hardening. . (Special to Herald.) NAPIER, this day. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, have received the following cable from their London office: "The wool sales continue firm, with an upward tendency. The advance is chiefly on scoured merino wools."

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co.. Ltd., report on stock sale held at Matawhero on Thursday, the 10th instant. The attendance, no doubt owing to an interval of a fortnight, Avas larger than at recent sales, and all departments were Avell represented, sheep coming forward m unusual numbers for the time of year Sheep: It was evident from the commencement of the sale that the yarding was considerably m excess of the demand, and as "a large portion of the stock had come from long distances and had to be sold, the drop anticipated bafore the sale commenced took place. Particularly Avas fliL« s«> m the case of hoggets .and it seems evident that the turnip crops are not up to the average or that there arc more surplus sheep offering than was anticipated. Our yarding comprised 8437, of which we sold 4795 at quotations noted below. A very large proportion of the entry consisted of serviceable lines of wethers and hoggets. The "potter" ewe appears to be nearly worked out. Wethers and hoggets suffered a decline of about Is. am if any number are required for stocking turnip land, buyers must have had bargains yesterday." Our sales comprised : Store, wethers at from 12s 9d for small to 14s Id for good lines, fats 15s 4d to 15s 7d, a drop which may reasonably be accounted for by the fall of .mutton m the London markets. Ewes, potters, made from 2s for very low poor skinned lots, to 5s 6d for better i-ond.itiorfand better skinned lots. Ewe-fs m lamb made from 6s lid for very aged, Os 6d to 9r 8d for sound mouth ewes, whilst a line sold on account of Mr Alf. Moore, of Wigan, of large framed ewes, made 13s 6d. Hoggets were a large entry. Culls from 2s to 4s, better lines from 6s 9d to 8s; while we sold a pen on account of Mr McDougall, Wigan, hoggets that did him credit at 10s, and they were distinctly cheap at the money. Cattle. — Otu- entry comprised 300, for the most part serviceable lines of cattle. It Avas late m the day when the cattle entry was reached, but it was pleasing to note a little better demand than has existed for some time past m this department. Our quotations arc as follows : Weaners made from 22s 6d to 355, the latter for a line of polled Angus cross weaners, which came forward m excellent condition. Yearling steers made. from £2 to £2 7s 6d, 18 month' mixed £2 17s 6d, grown steers £4 10s to £4 17s 6d, the latter price being, for a pen which would require very little finishing. Herd cows made £3 10s, dairy heifers up to £4 15s, beef cows £4 7s 6d for light weights, aud up to £4 15s for heavier cattle.
