Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, this day. Thomas Clarke and Constable Rowc met with an exciting adventure last night m the harbor. They started for Hobsonville m an oil launch, and the' journey proceeded uneventually until well out into the harbor. Then it was suddenly discovered that the vessel was leaking. Soon the engine was running m water, and the two men realised' that the launch would sink unless the cargo was jettisoned. About a ton of horse feed, lime, and stores had been loaded on the launch. When the cargo had been jettisoned they were relieved to find that the water was not gainjng and the launch was slowly run in" the direction of Hobsonville. The injuries to the hull which caused the accident have not yet boon ascertained, «but it is believed that while the launch was lying alongside the Auckland breastwork during the day it was cither crushed by another boat or was run into. Chief Detective Marsack prosecuted a man. named w - B- Willoughby; alias Riley and Whitely, m the Police Court yesierday afternoon for obtaining £9 10s from John Paton by false pretences. Paton, a farmer at Wairoa South, stated that m December, 1903, Willoughby represented to him that he was about to buy a farm at Bombay. He declared that his balance at tho Bank of NewZealand totalled £4500, and witness thought it safe, m consequence, to cash one of accused's cheques for £9 10s. It was returned p marked "no account." Evidence was 'called to show that Willoughby never had any account at the Bank of New Zealand, and accused, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court. At the annual meeting of the Archhill ratepSfers the Greater Auckland proposals were rejected. The census returns for several of the districts m the Manakau County have been completed. As the County is a very scattered one, it has veen impossible to complete all the returns, and the figures for the remaining districts will not be available for a few days. Of j returns completed, increases of population since last census are shown m ten instances. In four of the other districts slight decreases from one to sixteen are shown, and m the other case, that of the Great Barrier there is a decrease of 185, as compared with the figures for 1901. Hutana, Apiti, Kremlin. Lull, und Shrapnel have been withdrawn for all engagements for the Auckland winter meeting.
Mrs McCaig, a visitor from Fiji, was assaulted by a burglar at Devonport last night. She entered her bedroom, when the thief seized her by the throat and neck^ dragged her to the door, thrusting lvis fingers down her throat to prevent her screaming. Then he bolted. When tho other occupants of the house arrived
the thief had disappeared, and the woman who was m a weak state of health, faint.' cd, remaining unconscious for some little time. Her luggage Avas overhauled, ten sovereigns being stolen. 'WELLINGTON, this day. Mi- Seddon, who leaves to-day, -will be absent from New Zealand for three Avceks. While m Sydney ho Avill bo entertained by the New 'Zealand residents there. Cabinet have agreed to appoint a Commission to collect information dealing with the early history of tho colony. The colony is to be- divided into districts, and collectors arc being appointed m each district, and their duties involve securing experiences and matters of public interest ■from those who landed or were bom m the colony prior to 1870. Special intention is to be devoted to old settlers m the large centres, also to old Avhukrs and miners. The investigation is to cover tho period from the foundation of the" colony to 1887. The mate and three of tho creAv of the ship Cassias, who pleaded guilty to cargo broaching during the voyage from England, Avere sentenced this morning to terms of imprisonment ranging from six to one mouth. Some mystery surrounds the death of a Greek named George Cassidy, 62 years of age. At the inquest the daughter of deceased said he was m the habit of Avearing a belt containing £5000 m notes. Only 6s was found on the body of deceased. A verdict of death from heart disease Avas returned. The horses Rutana, Kaitore, Apiti, Kremlin, Lull, Shrapnell, and Black Reynard, Avhich are being AvithdraAvn from the New Zealand Winter engagements, shortly go to Australia . The body of the man foumd in -the harbor yesterday has been identified as Jeremiah Loahy, laborer. (Special to Herald.) DUNEDIN, this day. The Harbor Board is calling a conference of representatives of all public bodies and members of the Legislature for the 15th inst., m reference to tho action, of the Railway Department m extending the. railway yards from Auderson's Bay road to Logan's Point, thereby prejudi- . cially affecting the Board's endowments.
