(Per s.s. Sierra at Auckland.) TOKIO, March 25. The misery and suffering in the famine districts has been slightly relieved by prompt aid from domestic and foreign sources, arid an abatement of the rigors of the winter. The local authorities are trying to provide work for the able-bod-ied, but the extent of work is inadequate, and tens of ' thousands are still on the verge of starvation. Many parents are parting frdm their children, Rending tlierti to the already crowded Okayama orphanage. Thfl severity of the suffering tindei^one by the children is cleully depicted in the facts of those who are compiled to (part from their homes, where food consists of flour mixed witii straw and iweeds. The Government Ims remitted the land tax in the famine districts, but' this will hot afford immediate relief. liberal contributions from America are already effective. Another uppeal for aid is presented by the sUffeleiß from the recent earthqutikes in fjotitli Formosa, thousands of whom are homeless. The local Government is busy providing fo(td and relief for the injured and recovering the corpses, several hundreds of which are buried under, the debris. . >
