DEATH IN THE PRIZE RING.
v i\j NEW YORK. March 1. American pugilism, which, owing to dishonesty and brutality, has fallen to a low ebb, suffered further degradation by a fight at San Francisco last night between two bantam-weights, named Neil and Tenny, which was prolonged after the latter was hopelessly beaten and nntil he received such further injuries that he died without recovering consciousness. In the fourteenth round Tenny was counted out, but as he was able to raise himself, though he was tottering, tho referee did not stop the fight, in order, it was explained, to give Tenny the benefit of tbe doubt.
The dazed and dying man was unable to resist, or even to speak. He had to sustain another onslaught from his stronger opponent, who finished with a rain of savage body blows. The spectacle of the dying man touched the conscience of all the respectable persons present.
