VESUVIUS ERUPTION.

ROME, April 13. Professor Mattuchi remained at his Eost at the Vesuvius Observatory. He as telegraphed that there are quieter and more reassuring siesmic records. Latest reports state that the eruption is subsiding. The appearance of Vesuvius is entirely changed. Tho old cone has almost disappeared, leaving a flattened ridge. Business is at a standstill at Naples. The rain of ashes continues widely, though it has ceased at Naples. Professor Mattuchi says that the whole of the central crater has been blown in the air. Millions of tons of material has been scattered, noticeably altering the configuration of the country. The inmates of the Observatory are living on an inferno. Their lives are in constant danger. King Emanuel and Queen Helena visited the sufferers at the hospital and the fugitives. The sun, behind the clbuds of lightred dust from Vesuvius, shines pale blue.
