POSTMEN'S PERILS.
A YEAR'S DEATH-ROLL IN INDIA
Thieves, tigers, wolves; snow, and flood do not a little to break the monotony of the Indian postman's round. The report of the Indian Post Office for the year 1904, summarised m the Allahabad Pioneer, states that a mail runner was carried off m broad daylight by a maneating tiger while on a hill road running through a dense forest m the Central Provinces. Another, m the Ahmednagar district of the Bombay Presidency, was attacked by a wolf, which was the terror of the countryside. After a fierce fight ,he succeeded m killing it with his staff, a feat for which he was specially rewarded. On three occasions boats were upset m crossing flooded rivers. On one the mail carrier was drowned, while tho mails were - saved, and m the other two the mails were lost, but the men escaped. In February the mail for Chitral was swept away by an avalanche m the Lowari Pass, 15 men perishing m the snow. A piece of ill-fortune quite "outside the day's work" befel a village postman, who was murdered by mistake m the Punjab. While sleeping one night near a wine seller's shop m one of the hamlets on his round, he was struck several heavy blows with a club and killed by a resident of the village. The mur. derer stated on being arrested that it had been his intention to kill the wine seller, with whom he had had a quarrel.
