HOW TO VOTE. SCORE OUT THE TWO BOTTOM LINES AS FOLLOWS : I Vote that tbe nnmber ol Licenses existing m the district Continue i-.TOh fh.f inn nnm_» nt Tin_nn„ n r |^^ *„ ■I-y.to that no ttmw bo groplod m tho dMfi.t * OPINION OF A PROMINENT PROHIBITIONIST RESIDENT IN MATAURA. (CO.V.) j To the Editor, Mataura Ensign. Sir, — We call tliis a prohibition district, but it is so only m . name. Why should we prevent drink being sold here, when the law allows it to como into tho district like any commodity? Take this town (Mataura) for instance. Some s|y it has done good to several "old topers." I grant it has to a certain extent, but even they may be seen now and then the worse for liquor. But what I deplore most is the number of young fellows who havo gene m for drinking heavily 6inco prohibition was carried, ruining themselves fast, body and soul. There are many m this place who band together and get liquor, and then spend a night, yea two or tluee nights, m debauchery m huts or out-of-the-way places. Were the parents respectable people, to be told this they would not believe it. To-night I had occasion to go to a Government ollice on business, and though there was a light m tiie ofl.ee the door was locked. Before tho door wa« opened I was questioned as to who 1 was. When I was admitted to an atmosphere thick with smoke, there was the unniis-t:-kcablc odoip-'of liquor. As no ono seems inclined to sa*v anything publicly and try io prevent the ruin of these young fellows, I beg that you will grant me .space m your column-* for the above. I am, etc., Mataura, July 4, 1905. A. X. MACGIBBON. ' l
