At the Farmers' Union meeting this afternoon, Mr Thomson said he could get no information as to the existence of ragwort at Tahora, but there was a. sort of groundsel there like ragwort. — It was decided to leave out the name of the Taimra reserve, and to send copies of the resolution passed to the Hon. Mr Carroll and the Minister of Lands. On the motion of Mr A. Cameron, seconded by Mr P. McLoughlin, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Campbell Thomson for his attendance.—Mr Herbert Brown, on belialf of the carriers of the district, wrote stating tlial. at a meeting it was deoided to approach the County Council with a view to obtain a relaxation of the tyre by-law, as iit was considered the wide tyres ordered would make it impossible to use the back roads of the district. The Unions co-operation was invited, and they were asked to appoint a deputation to wait with the carters' committee on the Council.—The Chairman said the matter was most important. He thought the idea of the County Council was a good one, but they had "gone too far. Their by-law would slop all traffic cm the back roads. If they so managed it, tliere was no reason why settlers could not cart their supplies during the summer months. The Union could well as>k the Council to modify their by-law. —Mv McLoughlin said a six-inch tyre was too much, andl a 4iin. was quite enough. —Tlie Chairman said 6in. tyres were dan, gerous on such roads as they had m this district, as on the side cuttings they would skidL— Mr Gallagher said that to increase the tyres would mean getting new drays and plant. What the Council should do was to limit the weight carried. The Council wanted to stop drays from timber mills with, big loads cutting u,p the roads. A limit of a ton could be made.— Mr H. H. Wall endorsed Mr Gallagher's proposal that a limit of a ton should be made.— Mr F. Lysnar pointed out that to change the size of tyres would mean a big expense. It would be dangerous, winter or summer, carting on the Tiniroto road if there was a shower of rain.— On the motion of Mr E. Cameron, it was resolved to appoint a committee to wait on tlie Council.— The Chairman, Messrs H. H. Wall, and Barron were appointed to wait on the Council conjointly with the carters.— lt was resolved that the Council should be asked to make no alteration m the width, of the lyres, and that the wagons be limited to a* ton and a half, and the dray to a ton. On the proposition of Mr Wall, seconded 'by Mr Gallagher, it was decided that tlie committee be instructed to request the Council to make a track from the big bridge to the river so that stock from the sale yards could get water.— Mr Birrell referred to the milk disease referred to m a. recent issue of this pa,per. This matter bould be brought up next meeting. — The Chairman said if farmers did not import cattle from outside they would prevent diseases coming into the district. There were plenty of ca.ttle here, and there was no need to further import stock, except bulls to improve the herds. Farmers should not buy outside cattle at auction sales. — Mr Gallagher gave notice to move at next meeting that every person who is a leaseholder should have the opportunity to obtain the freehold at the Government valuation.
