(Per Press Association.) AUOKLAND, this day. The Premier, responding to a requisition, will address a public meeting iv Auckland on Tuesday next. The following telegram has been forwarded to the Federal Premier by Mr- Seddon: "In the face of your telegram tliat a test was applied to the two Maoris, the allegation that this was not done is withdrawn, the explanation being probably that the Maoris did not understand what was demanded of them. Your decision to refrain from putting a test m future to Maoris is a happy ending to a perplexing situation. On behalf of both races of tliis coilony we tender you and the Commonwealth for your sense of justice to a noble race dux warmest thanks. I assure you "that while the Maoris are deeply grateful for being placed on a level with their pakeha brethren, they will not trench on your policy of White Australia or violate the labor conditions, whiqh they much appreciate. •" NAPIER, this day. An old! resident of Port Ahurii-i, Mr J. W. Seymour, died as the result of . poisoning, supposed to be self-adminis-tered. He went into his workshop and drank some spirits of salt, and went to bed, telling his wife to send, his son to halm. Deceased told the boy he was dying. Medical) aid was summoned, but without avail. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. In the Supreme Court, Judge Edwards complimented the district on the lightness of the calendar, there being only three charges against four persous. True bills were returned m the case of Pefferd and Mumro, breaking and entering ; Syms Wilson, house-breaking ; and Frank Smith, sheep-stealing. Pefferd and Munro pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to two years' (imprisonment. WELLINGTON, Ibis. day. , The Methodist Conference resumed! this morning. The recommendation of the Auckland Synod that it is undesirable to attempt any .change m the present sermrate existence of, the two missions was adopted. A committee recommended* tliat Marshlands and Belfast be- attached to Durham street circuit, and that the circuit he obliged! to fulfil its obligation to take a married minister. Consideration was postponed 1 . There was considerable discusson on the proposal to attach a third married' minister to Wellington (Taranaki street) circuit. This was strongly opposed! by several Wellington, representatives,' who contended that Wellington already hadl its full share of burdens. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. In the Magistrate's Court John Doyle was charged with being unlawfully m possession, of opium for smoking, and also with concealing opium with a view to evade the prohibition against the importation of opium. The police entrapped Doyle, who was arrested m a right-of-way where he had taken a tin of opium to sell to the informer. The latter gave the signal by striking a match, and a detective and constable appeared 1 and arrested Doyle. Subsequently the police discovered five tins of opium m the backyard of Doyle's house. A- fine of £100 and costs was inflicted 1 for concealing opium, audi a conviction was e-ntei*ed on the other charge. Doyle, who had previously been fined £100, was unable to pay. andi went to gaol.
