The Post states that it is expected that Mr Hayes, head accountant, will be appointed Commissioner of Taxes, and Mr G. F. C Campbell, Deputy-Commissioner of Taxes, will be appointed, Valuer-Gene-ral, these positions being vacant by the death of Mr James McGowan. Tlie Valuer-General is to take Mr McGowan's position on various boards on which Mr McGowan held a seat.
Judgment was delivered by the Full Bench of the Supreme Court m the racing case Fairbairn v. Stead. The appeal was allowed and the conviction quashed. No costs were granted. NELSON, this day.
Messrs Albert Goodman, Ed. Rowling and William Owen left Riwaka on Saturday evening on a fishing excursion m a boat. On returning at evening the boat capsized a mile and a-half from the wharf while jibing. J. F. MoNabb went to the rescue, and got Owen and Rowling into tlie second boat after much difficulty, first tieing them to ropes. Not liaving enough rope for Goodman the latter liad to be held for ten minutes, but Owen and Rowling becoming exhausted had to let 20, and Goodman was- drowned. None of them could swim. The body was recovered 30 yard's from the scene of the accident. Deceased leaves a widow and children. An inquest is proceeding. DUNEDIN, this day.
Mr James Witt, of the Dunedin branch of Sargood, Son and Ewen, lias been appointed Australasian buyer for the firm at Home. He leaves for London next month. .
