The Ghajrman of the Hospital Board, replying to statements of the Premier regarding the Costley Home, ascribed his attacks to political 1 reasons, and pointedout that there is evidently a desire on the part of the powers that be to capture the Eden electorate as a "pocket seat" for a Government candidate. There were 200 votes at the Costley Home, and it was within the knowledge of Govern- ! ment that these were cast for the Opposition candidate last election. This view was held by several other members, and the Board today carried a motion that the Costley Home Committee inspect -the Home and report to the Board as to the improvements necessary. It is reported! from Scargjll that 30 men employed on the railway works on the Waipara-Cheviot line went out on strike at dinner to-day. They are mostly living at Waipara, and are taken to work by ballast train every morning, some having quite 12 miles to travel. Their eight hours d'ay begins when they reach their destination, and ends before they leave, no account being taken of the travelling time, and they have only half an hour for dinner, giving them no time to light fires. The railway authorities state tike only report received is that a few casual hands knocked off work this afternoon. The inquest on the body of Ada Annie Ford, who died* mysteriously on July 9th, was resumed to-day. The- evidence showed that arsenic was found in substantial quantities in deceased's stomach, and in articles of food in H. F. Stevens' house, where the girl was residing. The police could; offer no evidence how the poison got into the food, or whether it was taken by deceased 1 . The jury fonnd a verdict that deceased died from the effects of arsenical poisoning, but there was no evidence to show how the poison was administered. Durable was scratched: for the Winter Cup to-day. WAIMATE. last- night. James Cocltrane, a farmer at Waitaku, was drowned in the Waiho river as he was returning home on Saturday night. Deceased's horse returned home riderless, and on searching the body of deceased was found on Sunday morning floating in the river. At the inquest to-day the jury returned* a verdict of accidentally drowned, with a rider that as this was the second accident of a. similar kind at this place the Council should widen the road and place a gate across the road leading to the ford, and thus compel people to go by the bridge. Deceased was an old residlent, and was sober at the time of the accident.
