As ;the steamer Waikare was leaving for Sydney last night a passenger, a young man named Percy Seymour Eaton, was -arrested on a charge of having performed ah illegal operation upon Ellen Smith at Christchurch on November 6. He was brought before the Police Court this morning, and remanded to Christchurch for trial. , Judge Chapman announced that after the termination of evidence m the Auckland tramways dispute before the Arbitration Court-, lie received a telegram from Breen, secretary of the Otago Tramways Union, stating : '-Dunedin Mayor'statement that 99 per cent, of tramways' hands were satisfied, with their position is wholly incorrect." This, said Judge Chapman, - could only, have been sent with the deliberate object of influencing the administration of justice. Persons who attempt iv this manner to influence , the proceedings of a court of justice are liable to be punished. As, however, the telegram displayed thoughtlessness rather than anything more sinister they Avould take no further notice, beyond making these observations. NAPIER, this day. The assessors m the; Mount Vernon compensation case liave succeeded Yin agreeing, and the award was delivered this morning. J. W. Harding, y: who claimed £115,878 for 7303 acres, is. awards ed £35,728, and AH. Harding, who claimed £68,841 for 6264 acres, ' was awarded £57,777. In regard to the latter award, 2000 acres were deducted for a reserve area.
