The Fire Brigade meet for practice to-morrow evening. Mr Justice Edwards leaves to-morrow morning for Auckland, where he presides over the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court,- commencing on Monday. At i half-past six lost evening an alarm of lire was given, vigorously on both bells.. The Fire Brigade turned out, only to discover that the cause for the ringing was a rubbish heap burning m the west end of the town. Captain Tucker telegraphed from the Bluff last night:—The s.s. Rimu is leaving again for tlie Campbells to-morrow. No stock will be taken for the Aucklands this time. The steamer is taking the Shetlanders and stores for the Campbells only. Several good bags have been made by local sportsmen at the opening of the shooting season. Shooting at Repongaere two shootists secured 103 ducks, and another pair are reported lo liave obtained 50 at Awapuni. By the steamer Bombala, which reached Fre mantle last week, there arrived a large number of Australians and others who luive returned from South Africa. When the Bombala was at Durbar* three hundred persons applied for passages to Australia, but only a third of that number could be accommodated. The returning passengers spoke very despondently ojl prospects m South Africa. One man said, "I'm quite satisfied that those people who are always running down Australia don't know what tliey are talking about. I -know this much, that now I've boen and had a taste of what some people call a 'grand country,' and know iviiat. Australia is, I'm more than ever determined to set to and make a do of things here."
