Representatives of all local bodies' were present, ,and there was a good gathering of the public. The diamond drill worked splendidly. After boring a short distance a stoppage was, made, and congratulatory and hopeful speeches given, the opinion being expressed thai marvellously rich deposits of gold, secured from the lodes m the top levels may be met with at a depth, as had. occurred m other districts, which had secured a new lease of life, and a new era of prosperity through these means. NAPIER, last night. In the Divorce Court yesterday, m Honor v. Honor, wife's petition, and Honor v. Hpnor and Smith (co-respon-dent), of adultery, the Chief Justice reserved judgment on legal points until bis return to Wellington, PALMERSTON N., last night. There was beautiful weather for the final day of the golf tournament on Saturday, and great interest was taken ia the competitions. In the final for the open championship A. Duncan beat H. Gillies after an exciting contest, 3 up and 1 to play. : The ladies' championship was won ' dv> Miss . Rutherford, late of Wairarapa, m 108 strokes. la the teams'' match, Manawatu v. Visitors, the latter . won. Harold beat Gillies, 6 up and 4 to play, and A. Duncan beat Nicolaus, 2 up. WELLINGTON, last night Last night Chief-Detective McGrath and Detectives, Broberg and Cassell arrested two men named Edwin Gray and Frank King, on charges of burglariously entering premises at Feilding, Palmerston North, Masterton, Petone, and Wellington. Jewellery to the value of £300 was found ia their possession, which, it is alleged, connects them with practically all the burglaries committed m Wellington for some time past. King resides m a house m Arthur street. When the detectives visited his lodgings he bolted through a windpw, but was captured after a smart run up the street., The greater part of the stolen property was deeply buried m, a bole m the backyard. To-day the detective office presents the appearance of jewellery sample rooms. Accused will appear before the Court tomorrow. ASHBURTON, last night. An. inquest was held on Saturday regarding the sudden death at Ashburton of Mrs George Tilson, of Ealing. The jury sat four hours, and adjourned till the 23rd. The post mortem revealed a very soft and enlarged liver, and it was resolved to forward to Christchurch portions of the liver, kidneys, and spleen, and the contents of the stomach for analysis by the Government analyst. It is supposed to be a case of accidental phosphorous poisoning through eating rabbit stew. INVERCARGILL, last night. Mr Donald Lachlan Matheson, for 40 years resident here, and well known as a merchant, died yesterday evening iv his 70th year, after an illness ,of some months. He interested himself chiefly m church and educational matters, being for many years on the Education Board. He was also one of the directorate of the (Southland Building- Society from 'early times, and latterly president. Probably no man m the community had a greater share of the confidence of the people, which' was proved by the large amount of trustee work he did, mostly for country families. He was a man . of benevolent disposition, and but for his modesty could have attained any public position m the gift of the people.
