Amongst the passengers by the s.s. Aorangi is Sir James Hector, returning from a. visit to the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and Professor Klotz, astrono-. mer to the Canadian Government, who is conducting an astronomical survey of the whole world. The work is to be undertaken for the purpose of connecting the British Empire astronomically, the connection being from Greenwich across the Atlantic, to Canada, thence via, Fanning Island, to Brisbane, and Melbourne. Professor Klotz afterwards goes to New Zealand, to make a . connection from Hmvke's Bay to Wellington, where he will meet the longitudinal work which has 'been carried eastwards through Int dia and Australia. This will form a complete girdle of the world. The Canadian Government have undertaken the work at their own expense m the interests of the whole Empire. A Chinese plague patient is dead. A second case from Fortitude Valley also proved fatal. i There are , rumors of a coalition Government of the Labor and Opposition parties, with Mr Morgan as leader. SYDNEY, Sept. 13. I A tragedy has occurred at Cootamundra. John Baker shot a Chinaman named All Doo, and a woman, named Smith living with Ah Doo, through the hand. Afterwards Baker took poison, shot himself m the head and succumbed. Jealousy was the cause. The police raided a "two-up" school m Engine street, and made 84 arrests. The steamer Croki struck the Seal Rocks, and was beached on. a sandy bottom. . There is 6ft, of water m the hold. The passengers and crew are safe. The steamer Boveric, from Melbourne to Newcastle, m: ballast, has been towed to Jervis Bay, her propeller having carried away. SYDNEY, September 14. The steamer Perth picked up the Boveric shortly after the accident, towing her to Sydney. . MELBOURNE, Sept. 12. Obituary: Duncan Gillies, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He was found m a collapsed condition m a bathroom, and never rallied. He had been ailing for some time.
