Huia football juniors defeated West End on Saturday by 19 points to 14. The Bowling Club Committee have completed arrangements for the thorough entertainment of their guests at the social to-morrow evening, which is certain to be largely attended. Li response to numerous requests, the Gisborne Bowling Club have decided to open the gallery at tlie ball to-morrow to non-dancers at a nominal charge. The ball-room will be decorated on an elaborate scale. Tlie Ashburton branch of the Farmers' Union has decided to concentrate its efforts on a few of the more important planks of the "platform" with tlie object of getting the Government to attend to its requests. A telegram from Dunedin gives the following dredging returns for the week m which local »investors are interested : — Manuherikia 2570z, Hartley and Riley Uloz, Electric 770z, Sandy Point 440z, Unity 430z, Rise and Shine 260z, NoTown Creek 84oz. A painful bushfelling accident happened on lliursday at Wharekopae, wlien a young man named Dennis O'Grady, a sou of Mr J. O'Grady, sustained a severe compound fracture of the right leg through a tree coming over on lum unexpectedly. The popr fellow, suffering much pain, was carried by his mates 14 miles on a stretcher to the road line, where a cab couveyed him to towu. It is feared that he may lose his leg. The concert commences at 8 p.m., and there should be a large gathering of townspeople to hear the Band discourse the excellent and varied. programme of music. selected. A presentation was made at Nelson last week to Mr H. McNeil Campbell, a veteran stock inspector; who is retiring from the public service. In a statement of the recipient's service, the Nelson Mail says : — On the abolition of the provinces Mr Campbell took service under the General Government, and was at his own request removed to Gisborne on account of his wife's health. On reporting himself m Wellington he was informed by Mr. Mauusell, then m charge of the Department, that Poverty Bay was considered a clean district, whereas on his arrival there he found the whole district infected with scab. In endeavonug to stamp this out he incurred the displeasure of a certain settler, and through the latter's influence with the head of the department, he was requested to resign) ou tbe distinct understanding that be was to receive a similar appointment m some other part of the colony. This promise was not kept, and Air Campbell remained out of the service until the matter was brought before Parliament by Mr Delautour, and a unanimous recommendation was made m 1882 that he should be at once reappointed. He was accordingly appointed to the Nelson district, where he has remained ever since. When Mr Campbell was retired from the Gisborne district the local and other newspapers, took up his ' case, : and . several strong protests were published against a mean system of private espionage on defenceless Government officials.

The ship Briunbletyo, which arrived at. Sydney from Buenos Ayres hist week, encountered storms of exceptional severity on the passage. Tho third officer was drowned, and several of the crew were injured. The decapitated body of a well-known Melbourne Football Club player, Daniel Moriarty, was found on the railway line at Jolimont Bridge, Melbourne, last week. The driver of a passing train, noticed the head of a man. lying on the track, and, pulling up, found the body a few inches away. Tlie severance was clean, aud had apparently been made by one of the early goods trains. Ata sports meeting held at Wisconsin, U.S.A., recently, thirteen of the fifteen competitors were totally blind, and the other two could only see moving objects. Among the foremost feats were that of a totally blind boy who kicked a footbnll 108 feet, and another who won a 23-yard sprint m four seconds. There resides m Dunedin a man- who has lived 40 years m. the same house, and worked all the time with the one employer. During that period (says the lutein Advocate) lie has buried two wives, two mothers-in-law, one father-in-law, two sons, one brother-in-law, and one neice, all of. whom died m, his house. There were celebrated m the same house eight marriages and one golden wedding during thai time. The butter-making industry of Victoria affords a very striking illustration! of the advantage of co-operation and technical knowledge applied to a rural industry (says the Melbourne Age). Thirteen, years ago the factory system was unknown m Victoria, there was no export of butter, and the iiidustry practically was nonexistent. In 1901, which was not a big year, the value of butter produced m and exported from Victoria was £1,208,364, while the total value of dairy products amounted to £2,675,616. There was a wild scene m one of the fashionable wine shops of the Paris Boulevards on July 13. A numerous company was seated enjoying the before-din-ner "appetiser" that is almost de rigueur m. France, when, suddenly an automobile dashed through the window and among the dumbfounded customers. The roadway a little above the shop had been barred for repairs, and the automobile, brought up rather sharply, had swerved, and, almost before the chauffeur quite realised what was happening, had pitched through the shop window. By a remarkable chance nobody was hurt. Since the steamer Sultan entered the Fremantle (W.A.) harbor on May -4, 1897, it has dealt with shipping liaving a. nef register tonnage of nearly 4,000,000, tiw> net tonnage for the last year liaving been 1,500,000. Throughout tlie six years the harbor has been m use, tliere lias been no accident of any sort to vessels entering or leaving. In its construction no less than a million and a half cubic yards of rock have been tipped into the moles, wliile two million cubic yards of rock and nearly eight million cubic yards of sand have been removed by dredging. The latest available stock returns, wliile confirming the report of the shortage of sheep, do not (says the Hawera Star) afford evidence of any increase m the number of cattle to make up the deficiency. Tlie total number of cattle m the colony, as disclosed by the returns for 1902-3, is 1,460,662, as against 1,361,---784 m the preceding year. This is an increase of nearly 100,000, which is satisfactory so far as it goes, but the increase ■ m the previous year was 105,000, so that | there has not been any advance m the increase to make up for the shortage m sheep. Tlie increase m the number of dairy cattle is substantial, the wliole of it being m tlie North Island. Tliere is, m fact, a decrease m the South Island. Generally the figures appear to show that cattle over two years old show a decrease.
