HON. MR CARROLL
INTERVIEWED AT AUCKLAND. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this da) ! John Hislop and Jas. Rattenbury, members of the Taranaki Land Board, waited on the Native Minister, and stated that the Government had reserved 100 acres for a township between Ongarue and Tekuiti, and to make a success of it a further area of 2CO acres would be necessary. This additional area could be obtained from a native named Taitako, who was desirous of exchanging liis 200 1 acres for an equal- area of Crown land < near his homestead. The proposed site ' for the township was .stated to be near 1 the junction of roads leading to Mokau, ' also to Wanganui river, and surrounded : by the Crown land recently taken up for selection, totalling 200,000 acres of land. The Board had visited the ground and was unanimous that the offer should be i accepted. .Mr Carroll said he would see if the land could be acquired under the Native Councils Act, and whether the transfer could be granted, or the native's land sold and the proceeds be vested in the land he required. Mr J. H. Murray asked on behalf of Tekuiti residents that the township be opened up as a freehold. Mr Carroll promised to give the matter his consideration.
