Bowling analysis : Thompson took five wickets for 54 runs, Dowson two for 40, Bosanquet two for 13. An unpleasant incident occurred while the Canterbury team were batting to-day against, ttofc English team. Sims and Pearce at the wickets, the latter battmg^tb Bosanquet. The bails were removed, and a difference of opinion existed as to whether he was bowled or the ball came off the wicket-keeper. Pearoe and Sims both appealed to the umpire (Mr Bannerman) for a decision, but as the umpire did not see the bails removed he would not give a decision, and appealed to the umpire; at square leg (Mr Spencer) with a. similar result. Several jnembers of the Enlglish. team took exception: to the situation, and made remarks somewhat disparaging both to Uie batsmen and the umpires. Tl»e batsmen complain that this conduct was repeated subsequently on more than one occasion, and tliat they were inconvenienced and embarrassed tliereby to such aa extent as practically to cost them that wicket. The incident created a good deal of comment of an- indignant nature.
