During last week 30 eases of searlel fever m Wellington were reported to tin Public Health. Department. Major-General Babingtaa and Captaii; Campbell during the liolidays had sonu trout-fishing at Galatea. The fishing,was not of the best, as the streams were rathei low after a dry season. Major-GeneraJ Bnbingtou will probably pay a tlmee weeks' visit of inspection to Utago next week. A lady resident of Taradale, Mrs Skel ton, of the Edeudale Nursery, has a peculiar pet. It is an eel which has'tukeu Up its abode m a small pond m the nursery. The eel evidently reciprocates tlit affection shown for it, and, incredible as il may seeni, wheu. called by Mrs Skelton, will come out of its hiding-place, and takt food from her hand. The eel, which is about three feet long, has been a pet for the past eight years, and quite ii number.of persons have visited the nur scry for the purpose of eeeuig it. •
