! NAPIER, this day. In bidding farewell last, night to tlie East Coast.' Battalion, Major Chicken, V.D., whose retirement is caused through the Defence Department's scheme of reorganisation, said that it. was not for him to criticise the action of the Department, but he desired to remove an impression which existed that as commanding officer he had received a salary. During all his 37 years' connection with volunteering (dating back to the Omaranui expedition) he had received no more than the £2 10s per annum allowed to an ordinary recruit. He referred to the part played by members of the corps under his charge m the recent war m South. Africa., m wliich one company alone had lost two of its lieutenants, and said no battalion m this colony could show such a' fine record. He severed his connection from them with regret, but was proud to think that he handed over the battalion, m .such a state of efficiency to his successor. Major Chicken has been elected an honorary major of the battalion.
