(Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright United Press Association.
SYDNEY, July 25. Until the police who left Sydney tonight arrive in Queanbeyan-, the question of the identity of the man who was shot is in doubt.
There are, however, grave fears for supposing that the Guilfoyle murder has resulted in a second tragedy. A wire from Yass to-night' states that there are good reasons for believing that the man shot and his companion were two chair menders who had be touring the district..
They left Yass in the direction of Queanbeyan on Wednesday last. The description of the man shot, as supplied by the police, while tallying j,, some respects with one of the suspects in connection with the Guilfoyle murder, also tallies with one of the chair menders named Heaps. . He was accompanied by a youth, and the prisoner is a youth answering to the description of Heaps' companion, wherens the second Guilfoyle suspect is a middleaged man. The police are still actively searching Hornsby district. There is considerable excitement amongst outlying residents.
(Received July 26, 11.2 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 26. There now appeal's to be little doubt, that the wrong man whs shot at Quinbeyan. His companion gives the name of John Nicholas, of Cooma. A wire from Cooma slates that from the description given he is undoubtedly a son of a, local tinsmith. He left Cooma some time ago iv company with another young man, on a trading tour. The prisoner states he and his companion were at Yass on the day of Guilfoyle's murder. He does not know deceased's name.
Constable Madden was accompanied by a number of civilians . It is alleged that when stooping over deceased to take the firearm fiviri him'the constable's revolver went off simultaneously with a shotgun, discharged by a bystander. This- account® for the number of shot wounds found in the body. Deceased closely resembles one. of the missing suspects.'
