ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

THE RELIEF SHIP MORNING. PLANS OF THE EXPEDITION. (Per Press Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Hon. C. C. Bowen has received a letter from the President, of the Royal Geograplueal Society, giving partwul.u-s regarding the despatch of the relief ship Morning for the Antarctic expedition, and expressing great satisfaction at the action of the New Zealand Government m voting £1,000 in aid of the funds. Sir Clements Markham says the. cost- of fitting the Morning was "greater than anticipated. The Morning can take 300 tons of coal besides a deck load, and will probably take on board 100 tons of provisions. The vessel should arrive at Lyttelton early in November, and will try and reach the icepack early in December. Captain Colbreck is in command. He is a reliable man, having been one of the members of the Southern Cross expedition. He is thirty years of age. During the trial trip the vessel's engines worked very well. ■ When Captain Colbeck finds the. Discovery he will place himself under Captain Scott's orders, and Captain Scott will command, both, ships, which will do as much exploring work as time during the navigable season of 1903 will permit. The two vessels will endeavour to' return .to Lyttelton in March, 1903. If Captain Scott has succeeded hi navigating the Discovery far beyond the most eastern point reached by Sir James Ross along the ice barrier, he will probably have made his way eastward and will "come out of the ice somewhere m the "Ross Quadrant, Captain Scott has requested in this contingency that the Morning should not follow him, and Captain ■ Colbeck will establish depots containing two months' provisions at Cape. Adair and .the- same quantity at Cape Cijoz^r. and will leave large quantities of coiflHS provisions in. Wood Bay. Only in HUof disaster of the Discovery will her reporting parties return to Victoria Land. At present it is feared there is little likelihood of the funds admitting.of exploring work by the Discovery during the third navigable season. After the members of the expedition have been sufficiently rested at Lyttelton, Captain Scott, proceeds to Falkland Islands, and takes scientific observations across.the Pacific in as'high a southern latitude, as. can be traversed safely.
