In the fourth test match the Australians have lost seven wickets for 288. (Received July 25, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, July 24. The fourth, test match commenced' today at Manchester. The weather was line at starting, although it rained during the night and early in the morning. The wicket was slow at first but grew easier as play progressed. Tate,. of Sussex, replaced Hirsh, and Jones, Carter, and Howell were omitted from the Australian team.

Darling won the toss and sent in Trumper and Duff. The bowling was entrusted to Rhodes and Jackson. Nine runs were scored in the first two overs, and within twenty-five minutes the board showed forty-two, the result of splendid hitting. Tate replaced Jackson at fortynine.

Half a century was hoisted at the end of 27 minutes' batting. Both men were in excellent form, Duff keeping a slight lead of Trumper. At sixty, when their respective records were Duff 31, and Trumper 29, Braund went on iii place of Rhodes. Trumper completed his half century in fifty-two minutes, and had scored 51 to Duff's 42 when the total was at 93.

The century appeared within an. hour's play. The half century appeared opposite Hill's name when he had bean 100 minutes at the wickets. He made, n veiy fine display, showing only one bad stroke. At 256 Lockwood replaced Taie. The change was effective, Hill placing an easy one from the new trundka- into Rhodes' hands at mid-off. His 65 included five fours, three threes, six tiros. Five for 259. . ,

Darling was 24 when Hopkins came to his assistance. He immediately fell a victim to Lockwood, hitting the ball up, and Paliuret, running in from short-leg made a good catch. Six for 256.
