SHIPPING CASUALTIES.

LOSS OF A STEAMER.

A BARQUE POSTED MISSING,

SAN FRANCISCO, July 3,

The steamer Abydos, of the Kosmos Line, plying between Hamburg and the Pacific, reports the loss of the steamer Sakkarah on the island of Huamblin, off the Chilian coast. The Sakkarah was the new vessel of the Kosmos line, and was 30 miles off her course when she struck. It is believed that her chronometer was defective.

On May 1 the vessel struck on a sharp ledge of rock, and the breakers dashed over her. The forward, boats were carried away. The remaining boats were used with great difficulty in getting 42 passengers away. Captain Piening displayed remarkable heroism and risked his life in taking off seventeen boxes which contained two and a half million dollars in gold. The captain called for volunteers to asist him in this work, but only one young Chilian responded. The provisions had before this been taken ashore in sufficient quantities to last three months. The captain had a number of canvas houses built to shelter the castaways, and Sent off men in a small boat, who succeeded in reaching the mainland, 75 miles away.

The Abydos received news of the disaster at Valparaiso, and reached the island on May 16. A gale was blowing, but the shipwrecked people were, by the heroic efforts of the seamen, drawn one by one from the small boat on board the Abydos. The boxes of gold were hauled through the sea, and safely taken on board the Abydos also. All hands from the wreck were landed at Corral, near Caronel, on May 20. The German barque H. F. Glode, which sailed from San Francisco 235 days ago, bound for Queenstown with a cargo ' of grain has been posted at Lloyd's as missing. Never in the history of the port has there been so much gambling in re-insur-ance on a vessel as on the Glode. Nearly all the wise marine gamblers on the coast wagered that the vessel would arrive safely at her destination, and nearly half a million dollars were staked upon it. The heavist gambling was done after reinsurance was quoted at 80 per cent. and over, and if the vessel had arrived the bettors would now be dividing over a. million dollars. It is presumed that nothing will ever be known as to the fate of the Glode.
