By fast trains just put into operation by the Pennsylvania and Rock Island roads, the trip across the American Continent can be made in four days. Th& actual running time is 96 hours and 10 minutes from ocean to ocean, the distance travelled being 3176 miles'. A despatch from Tacoma, June 25, tells of the good and bad fortune in the Northern mines of William Perkins, an ! Australian. The filing of legal papers ; shows that Perkins, who died several days ago, on his deathbed perfected the : sale of one of his quartz-mines near j White 'Horse, Alaska. * The first payj ment was 15,000 dollars, of which Perkins' share was 5,000. The amount was paid to the sick man. The claim sold I was the Grafter, for which the Moor© InI vestment Co., of Seattle, paid 35,000 dolj lars. Perkins knew he might not. recover, and made his will, bequeathing everything to his mother in Australia. He l also made out a draft in her favour for i £1000, with instructions that it be sent !to her if he died. This1 was almost Perkins' last conscious thought, as he died next day. The Grafter was but one of the many prospects held by Perkins, and some of his holdings he regarded as much more valuble. He kept himself poor in cash by developing his. properties. The Moore Investment. Co. guarantees it will build at White Horse this; year a. two hundred ton smelter to handle copper and other ores of the district. ' The brig Galilee, Captain S. G. Treanor, j sailed yesterday afternoon for Fanning Island with men and a cargo of supplies for.the British cable station to be established there. In the party are thirty mechanics to do the land work.
