Received, June 23, 9.32 a.m.

LONDON, June 23.

The return match with Yorkshire opened at Bradford in fine weather. There was a soft wicket. The attendance was five thousand.

Jones, Carter, and Armstrong stood out of the Australian team, and Wainwright displaced Whiteshead.

Darling won the toss and sent Trumper and Hopkins to ■face the bowling of Rhodes and Hirst. When Trumper had made three he was finely caught by Hirst with one hand. One for three. Hill succeeded, only to see Hopkins bowled by Hirst. Two for three. Darling filled the breach, and the outlook soon became brighter. The partnership provided lively cricket. Both batted freely, punishing Rhodes and Hirst with equal favour. During their association for thirty-five minutes they put on seventyfour runs. Darling was the first to go, being caught at the wickets by Hunter. His score, included two sixes, four fourers. Three wickets for seventy-seven. Gregory filled the vacancy and totted up six when he was given out leg before to Rhodes. Four for eighty-six. Hill's total was thirty-two when Duff joined him. -He added a couple before being caught by Wainwright. He was an hour at the wickets and played admirable cricket. His score included five fourers, two threes. Five for ninety-one. Before Duff opened his account he was missed by Tunnicliffe in the slips off Rhodes. Noble who came to his assistance was less fortunate, and tamely returned his first ball to Rhodes, who held it Six for ninety-one. Kelly's arrival and departure were equally sudden. He glanced the second ball to the slips and it was splendidly held by Tunnicliffe.' Seven for ninety-one. Rhodes had taken three wickets with four balls. Trumble followed Kelly in and out. . After Duff added a single, the newcomer succumbed to a Yorker from Haigh. Eight for ninety-two. The attendance by this time had increased to ten thousand. Howell next added three and lifted Haigh to deep field, Washington taking the catch. Nine for one hundred. Saunders, the last man made four and played Haigh on. The innings closed for one hundred and six and lasted ninety minutes. The scores were AUSTRALIANS—First Innings.
