PRESENTATION:
TO MR JOHN McCABE
After many years of faithful service, Mr John McCabe, of the local police force, retired recently on a well-earned pension. A number of Gisborne citizens who- have been in contact with the retiring officer during his term of duty in this district, felt that something fitting should mark the severance from active life of one of the old identities of the police force of New Zealand. A presentation to Mr McCabe was decided on as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by his fellow townsmen, and this took place at his residence, on- the Whataupoko, last evening. Among those present were. the Mayor, Crs Lysnar and Jones, Fatliers Mulvihill and O'Connor, Messrs T. Adair, R. Johnston, O'Meara, J. M. Cumming, E. P. Joyce, and A. Crawford. The presentation was made by the Mayor, and took the form of a handsome chair, with an accompanying address. Mr Tc-wnley, in making the presentation, referred to the high esteem in which Mr McCabe was held by one and all throughout the district. He apologised for the absence- of Mr W. A. Barton, who was away in Wairoa. Father O'Connor, and Messrs Joyce, Lysnar, Jones, Johnston, and Adair also bore testimony to the respect which was fell: for the sterling character of Mr McCabe, t and wished him long life and happiness* Reference was also made to the regard in which the late Mrs McCabe was' held, and the capable manner in which Miss A. McCabe had taken over the management of the household. The toast of Mr McCabe's health was drunk with musical honors. Mr McCabe suitably responded, thanking those who had presented the chair and address for their kind words and valuable gift. A delectable supper, prepared by Miss McCabe, was then partaken of, and a pleasant evening was spent in harmony. The following is the text of the address:—"Gisborne, April 7, 1902.
