SHOOTING.

H.M.S. PENGUIN v. MOUNTED RIFLES.

Excellent shooting was done in the return match yesterday afternoon between the East Coast Mounted Rifles and the representatives of H.M.S. Penguin. The day was a splendid one for shooting, and the aggregates made ,by the two teams are the highest recorded in the series ot rifle matches between the local volunteers and -the naval team. Corporal Austin again sm>t well for the sailors, who were defeated by only 12 points, the totals being 307 to 295. The Mounted Rifles shot very consistently, and only eight point* were needed to make an average of inners. The scores are as follow : —

In the evening the Mounted Rifles entertained the Penguin team at a smoke concert and supper in Mr J. Craig's rooms. Lieutenant Colebourne presided, and a pleasant time ensued. The toasts honored were: "His Majesty the King," proposed by the chairman; "Our Visitors," proposed by Quartermaster-Ser-Evans, and responded to by Mr Mauicon, whose name had been coupled with the toast; and "The Mounted Rifles," at the instance of Mr Manicon. A lengthy musical programme was gone through, songs being contributed by MrOutram, Seaman Allison, Corporal Zachnriiih, Mr. Dorm, Trooper Ferris, Quartermaster-Sergeant Evans, Mr H. DeCosta, and mandolin solos and duets were given by Corporal Austin and Private Blendell. Mr E. Parnell acted as accompanist. The company broke up at a few minutes to eleven with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
