THE COUNTY VALUATIONS.

In another column we publish, the complete valuations for Cook County, which show an increase in the assessments of over three-quarters of a million. This should aid the County Council and Road Boards in their finance, but we question whether it will be as acceptable to pro-perty-owners generally as it will be to the members of local bodies in their administrative capacities. With produce at its present prices, the prospect of increased rating will not be welcomed, and the wisdom of levelling up the values is sure to bo keenly discussed. Viewed from a ; district ' point of view, it is satisfactory to find that we have such a large and valuable public estate, and the extent of our taxation basis affords good justification for the claims that we may make upon the Government for attention to our requirements, and a more liberal distribution of public expenditure.
