It is said that the annual fees received from different New Zealand Racing Clubs by Mr J. E. Henrys, handicapper, amount to- about £1400. At the monthly meeting of the Heathcote Road Board a letter was received from the Chief Health Officer, asking for the total number of rats destroyed, and the cost of the campaign against them. It was- stated that an approximate estimate was being made of the fatalities to rodents throughout the colony. Further proof of the curative properties of the rhineral waters of . the Te Aroha has just been given. Several persons who were crippled with rheumatism have been enabled, after a course of bathing at the Government Sanatorium, to discard their sticks and crutches for the . first time for many months. An English paper states the White Star line- will replace the steam winches on the New York piers with electric windlasses. This is said to be the first use of electric hoisting apparatus on New York piers. There will be eight electric hoists in all, each to have 30-horse power and 30 volts. They will be able to raise 40001b at the rate*of 368ft per minute. It is said that the Company became disgusted with steam winches this winter, when the pipe froze and delayed the handling of cargo. It is thought the adoption of electricity by the White Star line will result in all the big steamship lines following its example.
