KRUCER'S SLEUGH-HOUND.
Nahum Marks, the Transvaal detectivewhose name became notorious m the first stages of the South African war, has arrived m London. It will be rememoered that Mr Marks was imprisoned m Durban, and that on hearing of his plight, Mr Reitz, the Transvaal State Secretary, threatened that if sentence of death were passed upon him the Transvaal Government would "execute sis British officers ii place thereof." Mr Marks was doubtless pleasurably impressed with this estimate of his worth. He must be a good detective who is worth six British officers. Nahum Marks is now seventy years of age, and has had an eventful career. At one time or other he has served the English, the Russian, and the French Governments ; and he has taken part m several of the great' crisis which have during the past fifty years gone to make up the history of these nations. Mr Marks is m London to prosecute his claim against His Majesty's Government for damages. He wants thousands to compensate him for the injurious .treatment he alleges he received. He was kept m prison at Durban for a year under remand without trial, he states, and during the whole of that time was confined m | one of the condemned cells, with, as; neighbors, men who were awaiting ' the hangman. — Illustrated Mail.
