Grave fears are entertained for the safety of the German barque Minna Cords, from Hamburg to Fremantle. She was spoken on February 14th m long. 30 W., and has not been heard of since. During the voyage from London to Fremantle. of the Shire line steamer Buteshire a fire broke out m No. 2 hold. It originated amongst the shaving packing m some cases of saucepans m the afterpart of the hold. The fire was extinguished by the aid of the ship's pump. Little damage was done by the fire, but it was expected that a. great part of the cargo m the hold would have been destroyed by water. A general average woitld be levied on the cargo. The barquentine Kate Tatham was towed out to sea from Napier by tlie J.D.O. on Monday morning last, and set sail for Sydney. Her ctirgo consisted of 218,444 ft of white pine timber. The draught of the Royal yacht Ophir when she left Melbourne was 23ft 9in ' forward and 23ft llin aft ; but before leaving Sydney she would probably coal, and her draught therefore be increased by several feet. A return has just been issued by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, showing the merchant vessels of all nations of 100 tons and upwards which were totally lost, condemned, etc., during the quarter ended September 30th. 1900, as repotted up to March 31st, 1901. The steam vessels lost amounted to 54, with a total of 74,778 tons register; and of these 54 vessels 12 were steel, with a total of 34.469 tons, 40 were iron, with 51,031 tons, and "flivo wood and composite, with 278 tons. The sailing vessels lost during the same period were 112. with a total of 62,168 tons. The material of ponstruetion of the above vessels were : Three steel, with 7290 tons; 16 iron, with 15,493 tons; and 91 wood and composite, with 39,405 tons.
