COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
Mr T. A. Coleman, auditor for tbe Council, in" reporting on the balance-sheet, , recommended that the balance of rates outstanding be sued for. It was resolved to write to the Library Trustees asking for a new lease of the Borough Council offices.— The Chairman said the rent was £65 a year, and they ; had to pay insurance and taxes. Mr Julius Caesar (for Law and Co.) appeared m support of his application for a slaughterhouse at Ormond.— The Chairman informed him that an objection to the granting of the license had been lodged by Messrs Shanks. The Cook County Council had not the issuing of the license. The application and objection would be sent on to Wellington. Mr Caesar, on behalf of the Ormond ; Domain Board, offered to spend £20 if the Council would sp__d £20, m forming the road adjoining the Domain. — The Chairman said they had no funds, and he did not think the Council should do the work at this time of the year. — It was agreed not to do the work till tbe spring. Cr King said he wanted the Council put on the same footing as other districts m respect to the power of taxing vehicles. He wished an Act passed similar to that m force on the West Coast. He moved to that effect. — Cr Graham seconded, and Cr Jex-Blake supported th_e proposal. — Cr Hutdjhson thought they should ascertain if the Act was working satisfactorily m other places. — Motion agreed to. With reference to loan proposals, the Chairman said he thought they should postpone further action till after the new legislation was passed by Parliament.
The Chairman moved that the Southlaud County Council be written to, saying that the Cook County Council agree with the suggested alterations m the Government Local Authorities Bill. — Agreed to. i Mr Mossman urged that danger posts be put up at the Waerenga-a-hika crossing. Three accidents had occurred there .to his knowledge. — This was agreed to. Three applications were received for ■metalling Murewai road up to £220, according to scale fixed by the Council. A ballot was taken, and Mr Macdermott was drawn. A tender was received from Mr E. Devery for several works on Waipaoa road. The tender was accepted to 'the extent of £88.
