POPULATION OF THE COLONY.

The preliminary census returns for the colony have been .completed, and show that the population is 773,439, as against 626,658 m 1891, an increase of 146,781 m ten years. The population of the counties is 417,990, of boroughs 350,775, shipping 3521, adjacent islands and ; lighthouses 939, Chatham Island 206, Kermadecs 8. [ The population of the North Island is [391,143, aa against 340,641 m 1896; South Island 381,829, as against 362,236 ; Stewart Island 253, as against 252.
