There are a large number of members at both places, and success is sure to result. It has been suggested that during the forthcoming encampment of the East Coast Mounted Rifles they should be taken for one or more days m a light flying column to Mangatu or Motu and given some experience m scouting, etc. At Tucker's paddock to-morrow afternoon the district scheme football matches will be earned a step further. The senior cup contest will be between Kaiti and West End ; and the junior cup between Huia and City. Plays starts at three o'clock. - The following team has been chosen to play for Kaiti against West End to-mor-row afternoon: Coleman, Kirk, Ngatai, Porter, J. Murphy, T. Halbert, Colebourne, M. Murphy, A. Robinson, Nicol, Reynolds, Kellett, Newton, G. Brown, McKeller; emergencies, Bright and Hansen (forwards), Black (back). The gaslight display m Messrs. Adair Bros.' spacious show windows last evening attracted much attention. The windows were most tastefully decorated with a great variety of dainty and delicate fabrics imported specially for the May Ball, and altogether the show was worthy of the enterprising firm by which it was made. In our yesterday's cables it was stated that, amongst others, Private J. Stevens, of New Zealand, had been mentioned by Lord Kitchener m Iris despatches for valuable services. It is thought that this must refer to Trooper Stevens from this district. There was a very large attendance this uftemoon at the funeral of the late Miss Nelly Palairet, and a most impressive service was conducted at the graveside by the Rev. Canon Webb. As testimony to the affection m which Miss Palairet was held by a host of sorrowing friends, and m token of sympathy with her bereaved relatives, there was an immense collection of wreaths, and the coffin was simply buried under a wreath of flowers. Travellers along the East Coast speak m high terms of the work that is being done by the Waiapu County Council. When the new road and the four bridges across the Hikuwai are complete, Tokomaru will be brought within one day's easy journey of Gisborne. The road from Tokomaru to Tolaga Bay will be a perfectly level one, and save four miles on the present route. Every effort should be made to improve road communication between Tolaga and town. A meeting of the Ladies' Committee for the Hospital Ball was held yesterday afternoon at the Borough Council Chambers. It was stated that arrangements for the ball were m a forward state, and there -.vas every reason to look for a large and representative gathering on the.24th inst. The Committee request ladies residing m the country who intend to assist m regard to the supper to send word to Mrs Nolan by Wednesday next, when the Committee again meet. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, prior ti> the opening of the Maori issault case, Mr L Rees referred to the want of am interpreter being attached to she Court m such cases as the present me. The Court was entitled to the ;ervices of an interpreter, which should be " provided by the Department at its :xpenss, and he asked His Worship to nake a note of the fact. His Worship stated he had made a note of Mr Rees' remarks on the subject, and he would <cc that the recommendation should be forwarded to the proper authorities. Mr Tones endorsed the opinion expressed by Mr . Rees, and considered the matter should be brought under the notice of iie Justice Department without further lelay. It was only right that they should make provision for the services of m interpreter m connection with the business of the Court. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club meet yesterday at the Masonic corner was only moderately attended. The weather was glorious, and a splendid run was enjoyed by those who did turn up. The first iheck was at the Park racecdurse, where % good run took place. ■In the second ?heck the racecourse was skirted, and the run finished at the Makaraka Hotel. The first of what will likely be a series of social evenings' during the winter months was held by the Druids Lodge last night, m McFarlane's Hall, when fully eighty couples pnt m an appearance. The night was a beautiful one for dancing, and one and all seemed to thoroughly enioy themselves. The music was supplied by Mrs Fernandez, and, needless to say, ?ave entire satisfaction. The committee consisting of Bros. H. Miller, H. D. Bean, T. Griffin, P. Geaves, A. Wade,' J. Eaton, I. Franklin, D. McKeague, and C. Keane. proved themselves a hard-working lot, apd to their efforts and the sepretary's (Mr H. Burns), a great deal of the success of the gathering is due. Bros. T. Spiers and A. Sawyer acted as M.C.'s, giving every satisfaction. The supper was provided by Mr. J. Craig, who supplied a good spread, which was done full justice to. During the evening Bro. H. Miller, A.D., •n a few well-chosen words, presented Bro. H, D. Bean, P.D.P., with a handsome P.D.P. collar on behalf of the Lodge for the many services rendered to the Order during his term of office. In a neat speech, Bro. Bean thanked! the brethren for their handsome gift, wliich he said he vrould prize as a token of the many happy evenings he had spent with them. Bro. I. Franklin was also presented with a diploma, won m the officers'_race at the Friendly Societies' sports. Dancing way kept up till 12.30, when all wended their way homewards, after having spent a most enjoyable time. The floor, which was specially prepared by Mr G. H. Henderson, was m excellent order, and greatly tended to the success of the function.
