A witness before the inquiry said that he often noticed the 5.55 p.m. travelling at a high rate of speed. On such occasions the engine oscillated very much, and seemed to draw the carriages by a succession of jumps, "li^e a fox-terrier tugging fat a chain." He said, when he saw it travelling fast on one occasion, that he would not travel on it for "all the tea m China." About a week before the disaster he predicted to Air Lang that- an accident would take place, and when it did take place, Air Lang said to him* "Well, I see your prediction come true." Witness considered the speed was dangerous to human life.
