As most people are yearly, in doubt as to when the Easter holidays commence, it may be of interest to note that this year Good Friday falls on the sth of April An elderly bedridden woman named Fanny McGuire met with a strange death at Hobsrt. She was entrusted with a bottle of liniment for outward application. When alone she swallowed the contents, and died in great agony. A verdict of death from misadventure was recorded by the jury. The New Zealand Times points out that tha Government took a constitutionally wrong course in consulting members of the Legislative Council on the question of sending troops to Melbourne for the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament. It argues that as • the Upper Chamber has no vote on money questions, it should not be consulted on money questions in the recess. It appears that the majority of tha M.sH.K. are opposed to sending any troops to Melbourne, bat the M/sL.C. hare turned the Bcale. ,
The Wellington Ratepayers' Association has drawn up a platform, which includes the municipalisation of the electric light and gasworks. The new White Star steamers for the New Zealand trade will be named the Athenic and Corinthic. They will each be of 10,000 tons, and will carry 100,000 carcases of meat. ■ The Premier says he is a busy man, and has no time to enter into theolo-^ gical discussions. He has sent the following / carefully-worded letter to the Rev. J. K. Elliott, who recently wrote to him, protesting against displays by the Indian trooper on the Sabbath : "Premier's office, Wellington, Ist March, 1901. Rev. Sir,— Respect for the position you hold, and . ordinary courtesy, demand that I should acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 27th ult., and I accordingly do so.— l am, yours faithfully, R. J. Seddon."
