DUKE OF YORK'S VISIT.
} (Per .Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. At a meeting of representatives of the Citizens' Committee and of the Council this afternoon the Mayor, who presided, said that he considered sufficient calls had been made. on the contributing publio during the last year, and he had told tine Premier so, and suggested that Parliament be asked to make special provision to Supplement the £260 voted by the Council towards meeting the expenses of the Royal visit. The Premier nad intimated his willingness to advance a Bill for that purpose. I The Premier, who was present at the meeting, said that, wnile he did not for' tk moment propose to encourage extrava-. gance, he was desirous that New Zealand should certainly not be behind the cities of Sydney and Melbourne in the matter of display. Therefore, he considered it the duty of Parliament to take necessary steps to legalise any expenditure that might be incurred. If a strict interpretation of, the law were insisted upon by the Audit Department, it would not be fair to have members of local bodies surcharged for any reasonable expenditure incurred; and Government had decided not to put local^iodies in this position. / The Premier made & number of suggestions as to decorations and fireworks. The 8000 troops, he said, would .not take part in the procession. A section of mounted troops only would act as a bodyguard, the remainder would. line the streets. »
