There are already over 10,00 applications for old age pensions. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. At the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association' the Federal and State Ministers were not present, f owing to Sir J. R. Dickson's death. Lieut. -Colonel Collins responded on behalf of New Zealand to the toast of "Kindred Associations." The Earl of Hopetoun visited the range, during the akernoon. The Queen Victoria Match was won by Gargett, Victoria, who* scored 212, and secured the first prize of £100. There was an exciting finish, the winner beating Captain Hawker, of Victoria, by one point. Of the New Zealanders, Wilson, who was 27th with 191; and Winslade 31st with 190, win £5 each. Jan. 11.' Speaking at a smoke concert given by the Government' to the police m recognition of their services at the celebrations, the Inspector-General intimated that the whole two thousand of the States' police, with the exception of two or three old officers, had expressed their readiness to volunteer for the defence of the colony. Tasmania will receive special consideration. ADELAIDE, . Jan. 11. The War Office has accepted a tender through the Government for 300 tons of oaten hay for South Africa. The War Office wanted 3000 tons, but the conditions of shipment were so stringent that it is doubtful if further . trade will be done. The French mail steamers m future will not _ call at Adelaide voyaging to to Australia, as the. contract time is not sufficient to allow of a visit since Fremantle has been made a porb of- -call. PERTP, Jan. 11. A severe earthquake ' was experienced over a large area of the north-west. It lasted two minutes. Buildings were shaken, but no damage was done.
