FAREWELL TO THE MEN.
" A meeting of the Patriotic Committee was held at the Borough Council Chambers this afternoon to decide what shall be done m the direction of a •send-off. to the Gisborne draft of the Sixth Contingent. His Worship the Mayor presided. Matters were discussed at length, and Mr J. A. Harding offered to invite the men, Captain Winter, and Major McCredie, and the Mayor and County Chairman to dinner at the Masonic Hotel tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock, Mr Harding's offer being thankfully .accepted: The assembly will be- sounded at 7.46, and the men will, accompanied by the City and Whataupoko Bands and volunteers, march to the wharf,\ where they will go aboard the Tuna to join the Waihora m the roadstead. The with a band aboard; will also run on excursion to the steamer, as a portion of the farewell de monstration to the Contingents. Fares have been fixed at 2s per head. Time will not allow of any demonstration of an extensive character being arranged, but the send-off arranged to take place will certainly be of the most hearty description, and will convince the troopers* that they have the best wishes of their many friends m this district. Invitations were issued this afternoon by the secretary; of the Committee, Mr R. D. B. Robinson.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. Men are volunteering freely m response to Lord Kitchener's request? that additional mounted "troops be sent to South Africa. - Jan. 4. — Lord Kitchener has cabled to the Minister of Defence that he understands Australia is sending men to fill the vacancies m the contingents. He asks when he may expect them. He pays a high tribute to Australian soldiers, and adds if. a proportion of men over 'and above the numbers required is sent it will enable him to send some of those having urgent private reasons for returning home. He also asks that the men be fully horsed. It is "intended to send about four hundred men, with extra horses. AUCKLAND, this day. About eighty men of the Sixth Contingent go into camp m th© Domain this evening. Captain Reid, District Adjutant, will be m charge. The rest of the Auckland company will' be m camp by Sunday. ADELAIDE, Jan. 3. Some 400 men, including about 20 who served m previous: contingents, have volunteered for service.
