OVERCROWDED SYDNEY.
PHENOMENAL TRAM AND TRAIN TRAFFIC (Electric Telegraph—Copyright—United Press Association.) (Received January 3, 9.39 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 3. Some idea of the enormous crowds maj be gathered from the train and trair traffic. Over half a million people were carried on the trams on Tuesday, one hundred and fifty thousand m excess o: any other record. Yesterday it is esti mated there were four hundred thousanc passengers. People hung on to th< footboards two deep, and even invadec the roofs of the cars. It was impossibl* m places for the trams to pass eaci other. Numbers wera swept off, but as the pace was necessarily slow, no serioui harm was done. ) The railway returns show that then were over one hundred and sixty thousanc] passengers on .Tuesday, against eighty five thousand on Now Year's Day. The steamer traffic was equally big. The North Shore Ferry Company carried eighty thousand passengers m a few hours without a single accident. So great was the rush on the refresh ment rooms that many had to clos£ theii doors. Hungry visitors took possessioi and stood on the tables, and flooded everj nook and corner, so long as they got something to eat. VISITORS WITH A GRIEVANCE. (Received January 3, 9.57 a.m.) Some grievances have, arisen among the guests of the Government respecting non-delivery of invitation cards and notification of arrangements for lodgings. A prominent Victorian visitor. Sir William Zeal, President of the Legislative Council, considered himself slighted at the position allotted to him at the State banquet. When he saw his seat he refused to take it. He left tße hall, and subsequently wrote a letter to Sir William Lyne complaining of the treatment he had received, ayd stating he would not accept any further hospitality from the Government.
