THE BRITISH EMPIRE : 1800-1900.
Under this title Mr J. Holt Schooling I contributes a striking article to the f Pall Mall Gazette. He says : "In the year 1800, and not including the popula- > tion of the United Kingdom, Greater [ Britain had a population of 100,000,000, of which only 2,000,000 were white perj sons. One person in 50 was a white. > In the year 1900 Greater Britain has a 3 population of 349,000,000, and rather . more than 12,000,000 of these are white j persons; one person in 28 is a white. . This increase since the year 1800 in the proportion to white to colored persons j in Greater Britain, from one in 50 to one j in 28, is specially satisfactory when we > note that densely populated and colored India contributes nearly 290,000,000 to - the whole population of the British Empire, and that sparsely populated and mostly white Australasia contributes, dei spite its larger size, under 5,000,000 to the population of the British Empire — I fewer persons than the population of [ London. Vast Canada also supplies the . British Empire with only just over l 5,000,000 of persons. If we exclude ; India, then, the population of Greater i Britain in 1900, outside of these islands, . is 62,000,000, of whom nearly 12,000,000 ; are whites, say one white person to five : colored."
