[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, This day. Richard Harris has been committed for trial on a charge of pocket picking. Owing to serious differences at present existing in the ranlca of labor in this city, the Trades Council has decided to make an attempt to bring about a better state of tilings. With this object in view a circular is to be sent to every Union in the city asking each to send delegates to a coiiference to be held on the 25th prox. to discuss matters. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association will commence at Wanganvii on Thursday, 15th February. It is intended to issue the programme next week. At the conclusion of the meeting the members of Rifle dubs will hand in their Martini Henri rifles iv order that the weapons may be converted into the - 803 rifles. News was received hece to-day that Mr Percy Crabbe, well-known in swimming circles, and son of the well-known temperance lecturer, has been seriously wounded in South Africa. Crabbe went with one of the Australian contingents, and no doubt has been wounded in the recent engagement at Arundel. Mrs Crabbe is resident in this city; Young Crabbe secured second plaoo in the New Zealand Swimmiug Championship of Wellington. The Premier received a cable last night stating that the Midland Railway appeal case would probably come before the Privy Council early in January. At the annual meeting of the Gear Meat Company a dividend of 10 per cent, was agreed to. It is understood that Colonel Pitt, whose disqualification expired yesterday, will be appointed to the Legislative Council. AUCKLAND, This day. A lad named George Busden, while playing in a canoe, fell Into the Waikato river and was drowned. The river is being dragged for the body. A boat under sail was seeu capsizing in the upper harbor off Henderson's Point. It is not known how many were in the boat, but it is supposed they are drowned. The police are now searching. John Davies, a carpenter, 46 years of age, was found dead, his neck having been broken. His residence was in Union street, and he had apparently fallen down stairs. HOKITIKA, this day. Mrs Palenski, who received severe burns when her residence was destroyed by fire on Thursday, has died from the effects.
