!' The New Loan and Mekcantile Agency v ' Compact reports having held its periodical sale of wooU sheepskins, hides, etc., on Wednesday, 20th idbi. The attendance • was larger than usual, Napier, Auckland, and local buyers being well represented and bidding with great spirit, the result . being that all lota, except' two or three upon which prohibitive reserves had been "placed, were cleared under the hammer. 1 In sympathy with. the substantial advance that has taken place in London, prices marked an increase whioh cannot fail to give satisfaction and confidence to those ' engneed in the pastoral industry. Prices ' • were from Id to l*d all round in *■' advance of those paid locally in December, *" 1898, and in the oase of fine wool the advance was much more marked. Many growers who Botd early would have found ft to their advantage to have- had their clips catalogued, and in addition it would serve, to encourage a larger atteudance ol outside buyers, who comment on tbe fact that they are only allowed to compete foi the smaller lots and lower quality wool. Our catalogue comprised 74 Dales, &. pockets and bags wool, 1768 sheepskins, 21 hides, and 13 packages tallow. Wool Prices ranged as follows— Half-bred fleece, 8d ; cross-bred, from 5Jd for coarse, rougr fleece to 6Jd for better condition lots : bellies, 4Jd to 4|d ; pieces, 4jd ; locks, 2jd to 3id j crutchingß, 3Jd to 3Jd ; dead, 5d to 5Jd. Coarse croBS-brod skins brought from 3Jd for short-woolled to f>\& for full■woolled skins, ono or two lines bringing SM. Hides : Station hides (dry) brought from 2d to 3}d : salted, up to 4jd. Tal low : 14s to 16s ; rough fat, Id per 1b Our next sales are held on 2nd February 1900. The New Zealand Loan and Meroantili Agency Company reports having held ill monthly stock sale at Matawhero yards ot 20th inst. Our country friends being busi with ehearing and harvesting the atten dance was smaller than usual and tin offeriuss were also limited. Cattle : Wi yarded a few beef cows and heifers, to balance of the entry being dairy cattle am young female stock. The beef was smal but o! fair <!»»% and 8t)ld afc £3 I7s 6d »' £i&u Dairy »wb brought £3 to &

n- 10s. Heifers 4ls to 45a. Sheep: We te yarded only one pen of wethers of mixed y ages which sold at fair value at 8a Bd. Pigs : We sold porkers at 12s 6d to 13s 6d. il- Our January sales are fixed for the 11th s, and 25th, and as there is likely to be a I brisk and unsatisfied demand for all classes ig of stock we would recommend our friendß r- to take advantage of competition through j oi the yards.
