[Per Vbess Association.] WELLINGTON, Tins day. Mr T. Fairhurst, who has obtained the lease of the dining cars on the trains between Ohristchurch and Palmerston South, will pay a rental of £1092 per annum. Mr Cadtnan has finally retired from the office of Minister of Railways and Mines. Yesterday the Victoria College Council decided to call for applications for a lecturer in the second nnd third courses of the L.L.B. degree. The salary is to be £150 per annum. The action brought in the Supreme Court by Con. Lindsay to recover £200 damages and £42 balance of salary due from the proprietors of the now defunct Critic newspaper resulted in a verdict for defendants. The Victoria College finds the cost of Ihe Queen's scholarship so heavy as to absorb most of the revenue and imperial the efficiency of the teaching. It is not certain either that tjie money is beneficially applied as the age is too low to carry scholars far enough. They have suggested a scheme by which Education Boards should take over the scholarships and leave the College the use of the whole of the statutory grants. At Masterton, speaking at a sooial given in his honor last night, Mr Hogg said that ho believed the Government would still further assist the small settlers by relieving them of taxation and placing it on the broad shoulders of those well able to bear it, on some ot those gentlemen who had offered a bribe of freehold. A skull was fished out of the harbor this morning. It is supposed to belong to Luxton or Crea, both of whom were drowned some months ago. The amended scale of premiums for different classes of policies ießued by the Government Insurance Department is published in the Gazette. Heretofore the Departments tariffs have been the lowest in Australasia, and even now it is stated to be on a par with the lowest, but in accordance with the policy of colonial and American offices generally, dictated by sound business on account of the rise in the rate of interest, it hasjbeen found necessary to make very small increases in premium rates. Existing policies are not affected. AUCKLAND, This day. Dr J. D. Murdooh was found dead in his bed. The cause of death was heart disease. He attended the Presbyterian service last evening, The Northern and Western Maori electious are not complete, but the return of Mr Hone Heke and Mr Kaihau by very large majorities are assured. Alfred Thomas, who was seriously injured at Whangarei, died to-day. A respectable married man named Lipscombe, a cabinet maker, attempted to commit suicide with a razor. He was suffering from influenza, and was mentally depressed. He was taken to the hospital. The wounds are not regarded as fatal. The Hauraki Associated Gold Mining Company has crushed nine tons of ore for gold valued at £290. TheWaitekauriExtendedmonthlyoleaning yielded gold to the value of £826. At Waihi to-day a man named Colley met with a painful accident through a dum dum bullet, which had got into the fire along with the contents of a dustpan. The bullet exploded, and entering Colley's thigh inflicted an ugly gash. Where the bullet entered there is scarcely any mark, but where it came out there is a nasty jagged wound an inch square.
