HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The attendance at the Horticultural Show yesterday afternoon was very satisfactory, Cand in the evening the Theatre Royal was crowded. Taking everything into coneideration, the Committee are to be congratulated upon the success of their nrst iffort, and now that the Society is fairly under way we can expect great things in the future. Whilst there was a fair show of pot plants, there was not that competition that one would expect to see a ■ number of persons possessing valuable collections preferring to show only tor exhibition. The fine display of plants shown by Mr S. E. Lodge, of Messrs Nelson Bros., was the subject of favorable comment, and bad ha been showing, in several of the classes he must have been twwded the palm. Mr Lodge also ex- . faibited a fine lot of vegetables, which he generously donated to the hospital. Messrs 801 l and Son had a splendid exhibition of pob plants, fruit, etc, which was displayed to advantage, and attracted a great deal of at.tention during the afternoon and evening. 'The firm's prize for the best collection of vegetables grown from seeds purchased . from them was awarded to Mr W. L. File, ■who showed a very fine collection. Mrs Bees and Mr C. A. Bolton divided honorß in moßt competitions in Class 1, the lastnamed being awarded the prize for the best collection of pot plants. For pot >- plants in bloom Mr Bolton secured first . honors for single, double, and ivy-leaved pelargoniums, some really choice blooms being showD. Mr Bolton also secured several prizes in Class 2 as well as for fruit and honey, his exhibits in each case being of a" first-class quality, the greatest care evidently having been taken in their ' preparation. Mrs Rees showed some ' splendid plants, both in bloom and otherwise, fine specimens of mimulus, begonias, coleus, and ferns being shown. Her exhibits in all cases were of a first- - olbbb kind, and denoted groat care having been taken in their cultivation. Mrs Rees ■was a large prize-taker, and her fine selec- -..- tion of plants went far to make the show ' a success. Mr J. Fyson showed a beautiful -" box of musk, which was much admired and /" . ;Becored first prize.
