COLONIES' OFFER OF TROOPS.
" Sydnby, Dec. 16. Both Queensland and Victoria have informed Mr Lyne that they are willing to co-operate in sending a united Australian contingent, if necessary. The Commandant is of opinion that a second contingent would be accepted. Huudredß are volunteering. Melbourne, Deo. 15. Colonel Downes, the local Commandant, said that while plenty of men were available, he would regret the Imperial Government seeking more men from the colonies. It would be a confession of weakness. The first contingent was justified as a demonstration of patriotism and unity. Brisbane, Dec. 15. A cable message has been received stating that Colonel Byron, of the Queensland Permanent Force, was wouuded at ' Majersfoutein. Adelaide, Dec. 16. The Premier is endeavoring to arrange with the War Office to cable official reports of the important events in the Transvaal. Chbistcudboh, This day. News of the British reverses in South Africa form the general topic of conversation here. Great impatience is expressed at the inaction of the English generals, and local experts think much valuable time has been lost. They think, also, that this has led to many disloyal Dutch joining the Boers. The military spirit has, however, been revived by tho news, and there would be no difficulty io finding two or three hundred men in Canterbury ready to proceed to the Transvaal for active service. Many of these are well qualified, and it is hoped they will be given an opportunity to assist in the present crisis. They could all be well mounted and equipped in throe weeks. Dunedin, This day. The last news from South Africa caused a deep gloom in the city, and a feeling of general regret, especially amongst Scotch folk, that so many men belonging' to such grand figliting regiments should have been killed. While civilians are despondent, old military men refuse to take a pessimistic view of the situation. Major Kennedy has telegraphed to Colonel Peuton, offering for South African service.
