PARLIAMENT DAY BY DAY.

(Parliamentary Reporter. )

Wellington, to-day.

THE CIVIL SERVICE.

A statement of the attitude of the Government towards the public service in regard to the question of a.superannuation scheme was drawn from the Premier by a question by Mr Fisher, who wanted to know whether the guol warders would be included in the provisions of the police superannuation scheme.

Mr Seddon stated that what was keeping the Government bai;k in the mutter of the police superannuation scheme was the fact that the moment a scheme was provided for the police every department in the public service would expect to be treated in a like manner. There was a difference between the police and the gaol warders. The police were out at all hours of the night, and they suffered great privations and ran risks. Gaol warders had a number of advantages not possessed by the police. Besides this, if gaol warders were included in the scheme, why not asylum warders, and if this was done for them, why not for every branch of the public service The police force, however, were exceptionally situated, and the Government were going further into the matter, 1 and would give it the fullest consideration.

THE FINANCIAL DEBATE.

The Financial debate, which promises to be largely an- admixture of marine scandal business and a discussion on financial affairs, is expected to last three weeks. Captain Russell will lead off to-morrow night, and Will be followed by Mr Carroll. '
